10 Horror Movies Set During Halloween You Need To See On October 31st

These movies will help you prepare for your Halloween night movie marathon

If you’re like me, then you’ve probably seen every horror classics that people typically watch during Halloween. Spending each Halloween night either watching all the Halloween movies or the Friday the 13th series is likely to be the norm. And while you should watch these classic (if you didn’t watch yet), you’re probably getting tired of re-watching these movies. It shouldn’t feel like a chore to watch movies during holidays. Therefore, I made up a list of horror movies set during Halloween or October so you can finally enjoy that late movie night marathon again.

10. V/H/S (2013)

BUY HERE: V/H/S

Okay, yes, V/H/S has only one short story that is Halloween themed, but it’s worth checking out. The movie is an anthology featuring five short stories about terrifying situations and people. They are all tied up in the end by a central narration which is as scary as the short films themselves. Add this to your list, if you’re already tired of Halloween movies.

9. The Houses October Built (2014)

BUY HERE: The Houses October Built

A decent choice for your next Halloween night, The House October Built is creepy and will get you in the mood. The film follows five friends looking for the best haunted house, and while this seems fun, they meet a group of deranged individuals looking for their next victim. Again, this is for fans of the producers of Paranormal Activity and Insidious who made a pretty decent and scary movie for you to enjoy during that Halloween night.

8. Murder Party (2007)

BUY HERE: Murder Party

Looking for a different horror-comedy to watch when you’re giving candy to your trick or treaters? Murder Party is a perfect choice! Jeremy Saulnier, best known for Green Room and Blue Ruin, directs his debut movie with some passion. Murder Party has all of Saulnier’s signature style with an added quirkiness. One thing is for sure you won’t know where this one is going.

7. May (2002)

BUY HERE: May

Another straight forward slasher, however, this one is a must for all slasher fans. It’s clever and frightening. The best way to describe this movie is a mix between Carrie and Frankenstein which sounds rather cool in my opinion. If you need one more reason to see this one, Roger Ebert has given it 4/4 stars.

6. Ginger Snaps (2000)

BUY HERE: Ginger Snaps

The one and only Canadian film on this list, but don’t let that fool you. Ginger Snaps is a fun and scary teen horror film about werewolves and witches. Now, what better way to get you into the spirit of Halloween than creatures. This one is a must-watch if you haven’t already.

5. Tales of Halloween (2015)

BUY HERE: Tales of Halloween

Are you a fan of The Descent? Well then check out Tales of Halloween. This anthology film has ten short films all about Halloween and directed by Neil Marshall. The best part about watching an anthology movie is that you are bound to like at least one of the short movies.

4. Sleepy Hollow (1999)

BUY HERE: Sleepy Hollow

What screams Halloween more than Tim Burton? Nothing. Although The Night Before Christmas didn’t make this list, this Tim Burton classic is scarier and the perfect movie to put on when awaiting knocks on your door. Burton’s style is sure to leave you in awe and scared all at the same time.

3. We Need To Talk About Kevin (2011)

BUY HERE: We Need to Talk About Kevin

Imagine being the mother of Ted Bundy. Tilda Swinton’s character is all too familiar with the concept in We Need To Talk About Kevin. Playing out more like a psychological thriller than more of a horror, this film is sure to bring you in your darkest nightmare. Swinton gives an incredible performance that is both sad and terrifying.

2. The Guest (2014)

BUY HERE: The Guest

This 80s horror-action hybrid is filled with mystery and suspense. Inviting a war veteran in your house may seem like a good deed, but the family soon learns that no good deed goes unpunished. The score and the set design are two things worth checking out in The Guest. This one is for the people who don’t really like horror but feel the need to watch a horror movie during Halloween.

1. Trick r Treat (2009)

BUY HERE: Trick ‘R Treat

The cult favorite, Trick r Treat is also my favorite unconventional watch during Halloween. It has all the elements you’re looking for in a Halloween movie. Shocking, suspenseful and scary, this is a must watch during your marathon. Add this to your list you won’t be disappointed.

I’ll be honest…I haven’t seen the majority of these films, but I’ve been hearing a lot of great things about V/H/S, so I’ll add that to my list of movies to watch! We Need to Talk About Kevin is soooo twisted!

V/H/S is great even the second one, but it has no ties to Halloween so that’s why I didn’t put it on this list. Stay away from the third one though…
