5 Movies Not To Miss This December

Are there any movies worth your time in this hectic Holiday season?

Whether it may be Hannukah, Christmas or Kwanzaa, time is a valuable aspect of this Holiday season. That is maybe why December has one of the lowest box office numbers, until last year. Yes, Star Wars returned to record numbers, and it greatly helped the slowly lowering numbers. This year, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is looking to keep those numbers high yet again. Rogue One is eyeing a 130M+ opening weekend. Opening the same weekend is the Oscar bait movie, Collateral Beauty starring Will Smith. It will sure hope that Oscar can help its cause because Rogue One will totally bust its mood. Another Oscar contender that is looking for glory is La La Land. Big names such as Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone star in this musical. However, nobody has bigger names in their movie than Passengers. They have arguably the biggest names working right now – Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt. Christmas Office Party is also looking to get people excited for Christmas. This holiday comedy is your only Christmas themed movie to come out this December. Finally, Fences will be looking to squeeze in this busy holiday season. Adapted from a famous play, this is your 3rd Oscar contender coming out this month. The question is where is it on this list? Let’s find out what are the five movies that will make you stop your holiday shopping.

5. Collateral Beauty

In theaters December 16th

Rotten Tomatoes Prediction: 74%

Of course, people are going to see Rogue One, but if you want something different Collateral Beauty is there for you. It is not for everybody, though. The personification and the overall weirdness will turn some people off. However, if the concept interest you like me, then you may be in for a treat. Will Smith has come a long way from his recent slump (anyone remembers After Earth?). This is also made from the director that brought you The Devil Wears Prada and Marley and Me. If you like those movies that you may like the film as well.

4. La La Land

In theaters December 16th

Rotten Tomatoes: 97%

There are two types of people in this world, the ones of love musicals and the ones who get annoyed by them. If you are the first person, then you are bound to enjoy La La Land. Director of last year’s Best Picture nominee, Whiplash, brings you somewhat of the same premise. Similar themes seem to be present in this one. Two passionate people following their dreams. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I think we need more of these kinds of stories. Already, La La Land has seen an incredible critical response, standing on a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes.

3. Passengers

In theaters December 21st

Rotten Tomatoes Prediction: 75%

Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt may be enough for you to see this movie. And that is exactly what Columbia Pictures wants. However, on top of that is a story that will likely appeal to anyone and mix in it is a love story. This may be the second most successful movie of December after Rogue One of course. Only one thing can stop it. Lawrence has made herself enemies in the past couple years. Some saw her mocking of a reporter as disrespectful, and her portrayal of Mystique in the X-Men franchise has called lazy. Will this hurt Passengers’ success or did people already forgave her?

2. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

In theaters December 16th

Rotten Tomatoes Prediction: 79%

Star Wars is getting a spinoff and Darth Vader is in it. Yes, I’m extremely excited for Rogue One. From the trailer, it seems so well shot and beautiful. I’m also a big fan of the beach and forest scenes which look amazing. However, it is not number one for one reason -uncertainty. Disney has made it clear that they were going to do a lot of reshoots for this movie. While it is not necessarily a bad idea, it means that the final product was not to their taste. What strikes me the most is that Gareth Edwards’ previous movies have weak storylines. That was also something that people were saying with the first trailer. However, the last trailer has erased almost all my doubts for this movie, and I want to see it already!

1. Fences

In theaters December 25th

Rotten Tomatoes Prediction: 86%

The trailer for this film has it all. It doesn’t spoil the story nor does it reveal too much. It is just the right amount to peak your interest. The intensity of the trailer is also very powerful. To add to this, it stars Denzel Washington and Viola Davis. There is nothing not to like this film to date. It looks to have it all. However, as the phrase goes, looks can be deceiving. We have had a lot of so-called Oscar movies but a lot of them have failed to make their mark. Will Fences join that list or will it exceed expectations?
